Scottie Scheffler wins Jack Nicklaus Award: PGA TOUR Player of the Year
Scottie Scheffler, the current world No. 1 has been awarded the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA TOUR Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season.
Notably, Scheffler has achieved the incredible feat of being the first player since Tiger Woods to earn Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons. Tiger clinched the award for three consecutive years between 2005-07.
Rory’s Reversal on LIV Players
As a guest on The Overlap podcast, McIlroy took a different stance on players heading over to LIV Golf, defending Jon Rahm’s “opportunistic” decision to join the Saudi-backed league and showing some remorse for his attitude toward the players who chose to take the leap.
Here are the highlights:
— “I was maybe a little judgmental of the guys who went to LIV Golf at the start. I think it was a bit of a mistake on my part because I now realize that not everyone is in my position or in Tiger Woods’ position.”
First, whether you agree or not with the stance, let’s acknowledge how difficult it is to put your hands up like this publicly. I tip my hat to Rory for doing that.
Second, I’ve seen a lot of comments with people saying things like “how is Rory comparing himself to Tiger?” What I believe he is comparing is the status, power, and revenue the two of them have been able to create, not necessarily Major wins.
Both Rory and Tiger have huge voices in the game and are the biggest earners, without even considering their endorsements, therefore, are maybe less swayed by the money being offered by LIV.
— “I think what LIV has done, it’s exposed the flaws in the system of golf … I think what LIV and the Saudis have exposed is that you’re asking for millions of dollars to sponsor these events, and you’re not able to guarantee that the players are going to show up. I can’t believe the PGA Tour has done so well for so long.”
I think this is a really interesting point. No other major sport has such uncertainty around events for sponsors. Even if an NFL or Premier League player is out injured, they still represent the team and can be involved in brand activations. However, golfers can pick and choose the events they appear at so this is something the PGA Tour needs to seriously look at now that it has strong competition for attention and advertising dollars.
Jason Day Signs with Malbon Golf
Malbon Golf signed Jason Day as its first PGA Tour pro.
Steven Malbon, owner of Malbon Golf, has spearheaded a movement among brands seeking to shake up the world of golf by inserting a little more style into our on-course attire. Blending elements of contemporary fashion, streetwear, and golfwear.
Brands like Malbon, Bogie Boys, Manors, and others have bridged the gap from fairway to street, along with the majors like Nike creating golf lines and campaigns with stars like rapper Travis Scott.
With Malbon having secured its inaugural professional ambassador in the form of Yealimi Noh from the LPGA last year, it was only a matter of time before the brand extended its reach to include a PGA Tour professional. Their choice was Jason Day, a talented Australian who ascended to the No.1 world ranking following his triumph at the 2015 PGA Championship.
In an interview with Julius Oppenheimer on Hypegolf, a subsidiary of Hypebeast, Day said:
As a Malbon ambassador, I get the chance to sport styles on the golf course that I wouldn’t typically wear as a professional golfer. Perhaps this marks the opening of another door, allowing me to bring the same sense of relaxation and refine my personal style on the golf course as I do in the comfort of my home.
